Not About You

I wrote one that wasn't about you today
Even so, you might say
Of course it is, it says my name
And you might point to the L and the I and the Z and the A
When properly arranged
How the letters portray
Your eyes, your lips, your cheeks, and your face
But this poem has nothing to do
With any thoughts or feelings about you
It's about somebody else I once knew
A few years ago, maybe twenty two
Ignore the words, what I say is what's true
This has nothing to do with you
Not about the, now, frost covered ground
Or, without digging, this thing, we found
Not about that song, that voice, that sound
When she pauses as she sings "don't go"
Makes my heart drop and I breathe slow
No, it's not about that, just so you know
At this point you might call me out too
But this one is about how it's not about you
Rest assured that switch is flipped
Shears in hand, bud was nipped
Surely this shall not grow
If I'm going, I'll go
One last one that's not about you, ya know?
